Pinback: Information Retrieved

The latest full length from 2012. Sounds a little more upbeat and pop than some of the early releases. I think some of the songs would benefit from real drums, the machine does its job, but more attack would be better. The bass sound is unique, I read its an Alembic 4 string.

Destroid: The Invasion

I really wanted to like this, but I can't get into it. KJ Sawka is a badass dnb drummer, and the visuals are fun, but I felt like I was listening to a dj scratching video game music. I will say that if you like heavy dubstep with the wub "low-frequency oscillator" you may like this. I think I need more melodic tracks with less wub and drops.

The Comedy OST

Hellooo... ooo.... ooo.... is there anybody in here???

I'll keep posting away out of habit.

"The Comedy" original soundtrack is up on Spotify.  I haven't seen the movie, but the soundtrack is just a really solid collection of songs with similar vibe, old and new, across genres.

Bill Fay, Gayngs (which I'm feeling), Here We Go magic, others... also 2 excerpts by William Basinski.  That's how I stumbled on this, Rootless and I went and saw Basinski this week in Brooklyn, it was killer.

Anywho, check this one out, feeling it.

Bye.

12 string guitar

           really thinking about getting one...

listening to a lot of James Blackshaw, there are all these albums on spotify that I've never heard, and I thought I had heard most of his stuff. also listening to Robbie Basho, some of the singing and lyrics on "Bashovia" are really far out, but I'm really there for the american primitive raga guitar thing.....

also listening to Ernest Gibson, Loop Haunts, Koen Holtkamp's new album, new one by Actress_____

___latest__listening___list

hey dudes, here are a few things I've been listening to.

I've been on a bit of a Nick Cave thing on and off for a while. Some of his stuff I don't dig, but the mellow/dark/brooding stuff works well for me. "Boatman's Call" is something I've liked for a while. Lately I've been listening to "Push the Sky Away" and the Live at KCRW album.

Anyone been checking out the new Beck album? I'm liking it, but still early days. Dude at the New Yorker seems to think it's a "perfect album", or something to that effect, but Pitchfork thought it was bland and something like "a genius radical coloring inside the lines".

Also, early days in terms of checking out, but I like Real Estate and going to have a drive tomorrow and listen to Atlas.

John Coltrane "Soultrane" and lots of Mal Waldron lately.

James Blake's "Overgrown" hits the spot when you want to get that special relax vibe on, dig?

Still listening to Steve Hauschildt's "S/H" long album a whole lot.

The Records

Hi, guys.  Long time.  I picked up a refurbished turntable a couple months ago, and I've been picking up cheap vinyl here and there.  This was something I got for a buck that really grabbed me the other day.  The Records, S/T.  It's power pop on Virgin, 1979.  It sounds like Big Star mixed with Robyn Hitchcock's Soft Boys, with a little Thin Lizzy guitar harmony thrown in.  They had a strong debut, but they only had the one hit, the track "Starry Eyes."  Pretty nice.  Pretty nice.

Papercuts

Just a quick post...don't want to let WWALT fall into too big of a drought....

I've been listening to Papercuts' record Fading Parade.

It's psychedelic indy rock from San Francisco, replete with too much reverb on everything and wispy, mopey lyrics.

It's a beautiful listen; there's no weird or fancy sounds, it's just guitars, vocals, bass and drums...but whoever engineered the recording spent a hell of a lot of time making those instruments sound warm and lush.  Worth a listen if you're into Belle & Sebastian, The Essex Green, The Shins, Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen, et. al.
