esotericism and joni mitchell vs. bob dylan

this is a bit of random post, but thought there might be some general interest value here

first off, speaking of esoteric, did anyone catch the review of the new "crystal castles" album on pitchforkmedia today? shit like this makes me want to vomit:

"Crystal Castles may have come on at the tail-end of the blog-house/nu-rave/French-touch mini-rage, but they've now transcended it, moving from scene linchpin to indie stars."

secondly, did anyone read about the recent Joni Mitchell interview where she called out Bob Dylan for being a total fraud? Here's the quote, from the LA Times...

“Bob [Dylan] is not authentic at all. He’s a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception. We are like night and day, he and I.”

Which brings me to one of the most hilarious blog posts I've read in a while, ripping Mr. Zimmerman a new a-hole:

http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jwhiteside/2010/04/28/folk-lies-joni-mitchell-outs-bob-dylan/

It's a pretty entertaining read if you've got a moment. To put it into context, this comes from a blog by and for hardcore right wingers in Hollywood, so should probably be taken with a fairly large grain of salt.

ite, that's all i got. Have a nice day!

Oy... the "authentic" schtic. What the hell does that even mean vis a vis a pop musician? I'd much rather Bob be my neighbor than Joni ("hey man, what's up?" vs. "would you please not use your car after 6 p.m.? I can hear you backing out of your driveway").

Bob probably is a fake in Joni's world because they probably know each other, and the Bob who makes art is most likely different than the Bob who tried to bed her in the sixties, or something like that. Calling him a plagiarist is totally missing the point, it's like saying Picasso ripped off the color blue.

Feel you on that Pitchfork quote, might just be me getting old but I'm caring less and less about what the kids are getting excited about these days.

I'm a Dylan fan. The thing I always admire and find fascinating about him is that he never claimed his lyrics had any meaning beyond their literal sense, the meaning was all applied by listeners/fans/critics/etc.

I agree with Gabino about the plagiarism question missing the point. Most artists sounds like their influences and I think Bob Dylan borrowed heavily and then contributed his own thing. I'm glad to hear that that blog post was some right-wing bullshit, I was annoyed halfway through reading it.
