Band of Horses--Infinite Arms
Anyone have the new Band of Horses album, "Infinite Arms"? I've gone 6 or 7 pages deep on captaincrawl and I can't find it; no luck also on soulseek as well. The damn record companies and web sheriff have done a pretty good job putting on the kabosh on the blog scene, any new album by a bigger band is now tough to get. I've paid to see BofH twice and I just spent $80 on tickets to see them and Grizzly Bear by the waterfront here in Williamsburg, I shouldn't have to pay for their album too, damnit.

Yeah, Captain Crawl is pretty slim pickings. We might be back to DVDs in the mail.
If you like them enough to spend $80 on tickets, and you really want the disc, then drop the $9.99 on iTunes, cheap skate. OH SHIT!! I SAID IT!!
If you are waiting to get it in in a DVD trade then you are just pushing the burden of getting the disc on your homies.
I honestly feel like I shouldn't have to pay for their album if I've spent that much already on seeing them live. I'm waiting to get it either from a DVD trade or yousendit, hopefully someone gets a pirated version.
I'm guessing this is forbidden territory, but I can't resist... two "what if" situations:
1) If a band/musician can no longer tour--for whatever reason--should they be able to make money off of their catalog?
2) If a band/musician chooses not to tour, can they expect to make money off their recordings in terms of selling them to listeners (as opposed to licensing to whatever)?
Great point. Rootless, let's say your fave artist of all times, Ryan Adams, comes down with a weird disease so he can't tour but could still put out amazing CDs. You are saying he should hang it up and get a new job? Your philosophy has massive holes, but as soon as someone starts to point them out you go "whatever, I go to shows so I should be entitled to free music."
Firstly, despite DC's remarks, Ryan Adams is not favorite artist of all time....
But more to the point, I don't say my opinion is flawless/without holes. We're living through changing times the whole industry is evolving. My opinion is that albums are more like business cards these days, the barrier to entry is lower to record an album, the internet makes it easier to connect with fans, etc. And I think that record companies have been slow in trying to figure out new ways to both make money and support artists. Albums for $10 are still too expensive, if you ask me. I went and paid $5 for the new Radiohead album when they posted it, that seems like a good price-point to me for an album. Why don't record companies consider things like offering the album free if you buy an expensive ticket to a show, or at least for a big discount?
I don't have all the answers or claim to. It's a tough scene if a musician doesn't want to tour/play live at all or try to license their music. But I don't feel my altruism in going out of my way to pay for an album is the answer either. Musicians have to evolve with technology and the times we live in and find a way to make a living AND make art.
