Listening to Tortoise this cold, sunny Sunday afternoon in NYC. This is my favorite Tortoise album--what's yours? I read that they will have a new album out in 2009, first one in, what, five years?
Great group. Well it's hard for me to pick a favorite LP, but my favorite "moment" is on It's All Around You. Those couple of seconds at the end of "The Lithium Stiffs" and the first minute of "Crest". The hairs on the back of my neck go up. In a good way. Gamera from the Lazarus Taxon set is a beautiful track too
Hands down, it's Standards. But favorite album title of theirs is Millions Now Living Will Never Die. I am not quite as into It's All Around You, but they always put on a great live show. Yeah, they do that "Crest" transition live, and it always hits you in the gut (in a good way).
best album in my book as gotta be "Millions", because (A) the first track "Djed" has yet to be topped by any other "post-rock" act and (B) its the first one I heard (which always seems to be an influence when picking faves)
"Millions" for rainy day freak-out, "It's All Around You" for general listening. Has anyone checked out "The Brave and the Bold" (Tortoise/Bonnie Prince Billy joint)? All covers, some of which are VERY sick. Check "Thunder Road" in particular.
